Access, Connection, Engagement Network (ACELN) Program

Every Nurse Leader Plays a ROLE: Belonging, Brotherhood, and Leadership for Men in Nursing

June 10, 2026

The Access, Connection, and Engagement Leadership Network (ACELN) serves as a convening body that brings together expertise, experience, and guidance to support academic nursing in advancing strategies that enhance access, strengthen connection, and promote engagement in higher education.

Offered as part of the Access, Connection, and Engagement Leadership Network (ACELN) program, this interactive pre-conference brings together faculty leaders to explore practical strategies for strengthening belonging, mentorship, and leadership pathways for men in nursing.

Facilitated by the founders of the Network of Black Male Nurse Leaders (NBMNL) in collaboration with the American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN), the session addresses persistent challenges facing men in nursing—particularly isolation, identity strain, and limited access to structured leadership pathways within academic environments.

Although recruitment efforts have increased visibility for men in nursing, retention and advancement often remain dependent on informal mentoring rather than intentional faculty leadership and institutional design. This session positions faculty as a critical leverage point for change.

Grounded in the ROLE framework—Researcher, Organizer, Legislative Leader, and Educator—the session affirms that every nurse leader plays a ROLE in cultivating belonging, confronting bias, expanding access to opportunity, and institutionalizing leadership pathways for men in the profession.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify structural and cultural factors that contribute to isolation, identity strain, and limited leadership pathways for men in nursing within academic environments.
  2. Apply the ROLE framework to design strategies that strengthen belonging, mentorship, and leadership development for men in nursing.
  3. Develop a practical 90-Day Faculty Action Plan to expand opportunity, support retention, and cultivate leadership pathways for men in nursing within their institutions.
